It started off as a way to subsidise her maternity leave and now a Sunshine Coast mother-of-two with a passion for experimenting in the kitchen has expanded her sweet treat business.
Rosebed and Finch in Eudlo is a place for Cheryse Healy to share her vegan, gluten-free and refined sugar-free delicacies with the public from her cottage kitchen.
“We have a beautiful garden setting and servery window to do coffees, grab and go desserts and a small savoury range as well,” Ms Healy said.
“We are not a traditional cafe, it’s a relaxed garden studio to try some edible art, attend one of our workshops or grab that caffeine fix or last-minute birthday cake on the way through our beautiful town.
“Eudlo is a beautiful halfway point between the Coast and the hinterland.”
The business began in 2016 when Ms Healy rented out commercial kitchen spaces after business hours.
She experimented with recipes, selling a few boxes of treats each week to help earn some money while pregnant with her second son Alfie.
Eventually, she launched the business online for wholesale orders, home deliveries and catering, and looked to establish a permanent set up.
“We found out where we lived in Eudlo was commercially zoned, so we built a space out the front,” Ms Healy said.
“It was probably more of a project than we set out to do, but it was good because the business was able to organically grow online.
“Going through COVID we were able to manoeuvre the business model into what we wanted it to be.
“It was a blessing in disguise. I probably wouldn’t have said that two years ago, but it is now.”
The name came from the street they live on, Rosebed Street, and Finch is the maiden name of Ms Healy’s great grandmother.
Along with the help of her husband, Rhys Williams, Ms Healy opened the Eudlo site on January 24 and doubled the day with a big surprise.
“We did an opening on January 24 with family and friends and we thought, given all the recent Brisbane lockdowns, let’s do our wedding with everyone together after the thank you speeches.”
Busy juggling her two sons, Franklin, 6, and Alfie, 3, Ms Healy said the business is a real family venture with her husband often helping on the Friday morning home delivery run.
The business will continue its model of wholesale orders and home deliveries and, eventually, Ms Healy plans to make the space available to hire out for baby showers or private bookings on weekends.
A Valentines Day Tart workshop will be run on February 14. Information: www.rosebedandfinch.com.au
