More skilled migrants will be given priority processing to help Australia’s economic recovery after the COVID pandemic.

The Minister for Immigration, Alex Hawke, announced 22 job categories will be added to the Priority Migration Skilled Occupation List (PMSOL).

The Australian Government engaged with small, medium and large Australian businesses and their industry bodies to update the current PMSOL.

“The Morrison Government will continue to support Australian businesses, including through skilled migration, as the engine room of our nation’s economy,” the Minister said.

Leading immigration law specialist and former Law Council of Australia President, Glenn Ferguson, has welcomed the government’s announcement.

“It is no secret we are suffering a skills shortage due to border closures as a result of the pandemic,” Mr Ferguson, managing director of Sunshine Coast firm FC lawyers, said.

The Government and the National Skills Commission will continue to monitor the impact of COVID-19 on the Australian labour market and assess Australia’s skills needs as they evolve, and new sources of data emerge.

“The Australian government has taken another positive step to encourage skilled migration to play a vital role in the economic recovery post COVID and this now brings the number of occupations on the PMSOL to 41,” Mr Ferguson said.

Employer sponsored nomination and visa applications with an occupation on the PMSOL will be given priority processing.

All other skilled occupation lists will remain active, but the PMSOL occupations will take priority.
