An iconic Sunshine Coast club will launch its centenary celebrations with a special presentation that recognises its past, present and future.

The Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club, established in 1922, will unveil its new surfboat Spray 2, which is a replica of the club’s first surfboat Spray, built in 1930.

The launch will be held in front of the surf club on February 26, from 11am.

Spray 2 will be christened with a traditional ceremony and champagne over the bow, in the presence of former and current club members.

The boat will be presented to the club’s all-conquering women’s crew, the Mooloolaba Mavericks, to race at the upcoming Queensland and Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.

Mooloolaba SLSC Life Governor Joe Western applauded the Mavericks.

“We are extremely proud our women’s crew, who have won three Australian titles, three world championships, and many more,” he said.

“Two of the crew members, Sara Western and Sheryl Beaumont, are in the Australian Surf Rowers League Hall of Fame.

“So, it is fitting that Spray 2 will make her maiden voyage with our champion Mooloolaba female crew.”

Mooloolaba club members Steve Cook, Luke Ellis, Joe Western, Johnny Muellners and Steve Biddle.

A host of exciting events will commemorate the club’s 100 years.

Celebratory events will include launching a centenary coffee table book, a historical audio and visual walkthrough display and a re-enactment of early surf sports and the first beach patrol at Mooloolaba.

The schedule will culminate with a black-tie gala dinner.
