A determined group of walkers is preparing for a hinterland hike, to raise awareness about a disorder that affects more than 100,000 Australians.

Community groups and local government have organised a two-day, 30km trek through the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

They aim to raise $10,000 to help support people living with Parkinson’s Disease and to enhance resources and educate people about the brain disorder that leads to shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with walking, balance and coordination.

The Great Walk for Parkinson’s is the brainchild of Home Instead, Restoring Hope Parkinson’s Therapy and Parkinson’s Queensland and it will see 10 walkers, including MPs Andrew Powell and Rob Skelton, trek from Mapleton to Montville.

The walkers will depart on April 5, will carry all of their gear and will sleep rough for one night.

“It is important people know how to access the mental health and wellbeing support programs available on the Sunshine Coast, and the great work Restoring Hope Parkinson’s Therapy and Parkinson’s Queensland are doing throughout the region.”
