A popular Cairns-based business famous for serving wild-caught seafood direct from a restored fishing trawler has opened its second location on the Sunshine Coast.

Prawn Star will be permanently moored at The Wharf Mooloolaba and offer sustainably sourced seafood which has been cooked onboard.

On the menu are large platters that can be shared by one to six people and offerings include prawns, bugs, crayfish, oysters and salmon sashimi.

Patrons can also enjoy a cold beverage or two on the side.

Business owner Danny Moore said the original Prawn Star based at the Cairns Marlin Marina had built a solid reputation over the last seven years for providing guests with a unique experience.

“We always serve fresh wild-caught, sustainable Australian seafood,” he said.

“We pride ourselves on creating a really informal and fun atmosphere where our customers can enjoy the company of family and friends and make new friends while having a cold beverage. Culture is king at the Prawn Star.

“We were keen to replicate that experience in South-East Queensland and we believe we have found the ideal location at The Wharf as it’s right on the water in a bustling hub that attracts up to 1.4 million visitors annually.

The Prawn Star experience in Cairns will be replicated on the Coast.

“I am very impressed with the culture within The Wharf Mooloolaba and we believe Prawn Star will be a perfect fit for the location.

“Prawn Star has proven to be a winner with customers from across Australia and the world because it has that lovely laid back Queensland feel while providing guests with a simple menu of fresh seafood and selected beverages. ”

Karen Hugg, general manager of The Wharf Mooloolaba, said there had been significant interest in the Prawn Star trawlers since their berth at the Marina.

“It’s been fantastic to see both trawlers come to life after being carefully restored over the past few months.

“Prawn Star is a fantastic addition to our offer here at the Wharf, it’s such a well known brand to anyone who has visited Cairns and I am sure locals and visitors alike will really enjoy devouring fresh Queensland seafood on a restored classic timber trawler,” said Ms Hugg.

A wooden trawler has been restored and will be permanently moored at The Wharf.

Mr Moore said Prawn Star Mooloolaba had employed a number of new staff and would aim for a workforce of 20 full-time and casuals.

“We have a great management team in place and we are now on the hunt for friendly and capable staff as we need to fill a variety of roles including kitchen, bar and wait staff.

“We are specifically looking for people with the right attitude who want to give customers a genuine enjoyable experience and also have a good quality of life.
