The Queensland Symphony Orchestra is poised to return to the Sunshine Coast for the first time in years.
The orchestra will perform at Matthew Flinders Anglican College on Friday, March 31, when the school presents QSO’s Hymn to Mother Earth concert.
The concert has been designed “to soothe you, fill you with awe and refresh your soul”.
It will be conducted by the QSO’s principal guest conductor Johannes Fritzsch, who will bring to life a span of music from across the globe and history, inspired by the natural world.
German-born, Mr Fritzsch has conducted many leading orchestras around the world.
He conducts the major Australasian orchestras as well as leading productions for Opera Australia, Opera Queensland, West Australian Opera and State Opera of South Australia.
The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra invited Mr Fritzsch to design and lead the newly founded Australian Conducting Academy, in 2017.
Flinders issued a media release saying the school was honoured to host the QSO in its Flinders Performance Centre, a state-of-the-art professional venue with strong acoustics.
The centre features sufficient space to accommodate the ensemble of 64 musicians on the raised stage, providing the audience with a clear and impressive view of the orchestra in action.
Music students at Flinders have the exciting opportunity to feature in the concert, as part of the QSO’s commitment to playing alongside young musicians and seeking to inspire their creativity and ambition.
Students must audition for eight places to go on and practice with the QSO during the day, in preparation for performing the final musical piece of the concert as part of the orchestra that evening.
Flinders said it has a robust curriculum and co-curricular music program for its students from Prep to Year 12 with more than 650 music students developing their music and vocal skills across more than 15 ensembles.
“This will be one of the most significant events hosted at Flinders and we are thrilled to be sharing the experience with members of our Sunshine Coast community,” Flinders principal Stuart Meade said.
“We’ll also be cheering on our student musicians who are selected for this unique performance opportunity as they experience firsthand the power of music to enrapture audiences.”
