The Sunshine Coast legal fraternity has raised more than $40,000 to ensure the most vulnerable in the community have access to justice.
The wine dinner at Venue 114 on Thursday night attracted 200 guests who raised $40,759 for the Suncoast Community Legal Service (SCLS).
Now in its third year, the annual fundraising event, hosted by Travis Schultz and Partners, has doubled in size and raised $86,000 since launching.
“Everyone in our community should have access to justice and that’s why the Suncoast Community Legal Service is so important to the Sunshine Coast region,” managing partner Travis Schultz said.
“Lawyers across the Coast volunteer their time to provide pro-bono advice to those who can’t afford their own lawyer. But the service must pay its bills for rent, support staff and running costs, and events like this one help to make it possible. It’s just another way that the generous legal fraternity on the Coast give back to their community.”
SCLS managing solicitor Julian Porter said the work the legal fraternity does for the community is needed more than ever.
“With the financial support from the annual fundraiser, SCLS can administer one of the top community legal services in the country, meaning more people can get help with their legal problems before the issue becomes overwhelming. This directly impacts our community’s resilience and wellness,” he said.
This year special guests included Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson and Deputy Chief Magistrate Stephen Courtney. The keynote address was delivered by Lawyers Weekly editor Jerome Doraisamy, and the audience was treated to a lesson in wine pairing by three-time Australian Winemaker of the Year Shane Harris and an auction led by Brodie Rodgers from Ray White Buderim.
