A new social housing complex is welcoming its first residents, after construction finished on Thursday.
The $11.7 million complex at Beerwah has 17 one-bedroom and 16 two-bedroom townhouses as well as a community room, used to provide onsite support to tenants.
Queensland Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon was at Beerwah to mark the end of the build and met with local housing and homelessness services.
“We know housing pressure is being felt across the country, and as a government it’s important we listen to local services to understand what the housing situation is in their communities and look at how we can work with them to deliver better outcomes for people at a local level,” she said.
“This project is a great example of what can be achieved when government works with local community housing providers like Coast2Bay to help the most vulnerable in our community.
“Projects like this are what our social housing program is about – helping Queenslanders get a secure roof over their head when they need it most.”
Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt said 160 social homes had been built in the region within the past five years.
“This new complex will provide help for the most vulnerable in our community, and importantly provides greater accessibility to local shops, services and public transport,” he said.
Coast2Bay Housing Group CEO Andrew Elvin said the complex would make a a significant difference to many people.
“These townhouses will be more than a home, they will be a place for people to live affordably, be good neighbours, contribute to the community and be a place where families and individuals in need can flourish,” he said.
The State Government is aiming to help deliver 13,000 homes around the state.
