An annual, internationally acclaimed marathon festival is set to feature more participants than ever this weekend.

The Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival, to be held in the same area as the 2032 Olympics marathon, is set to include more than 8000 competitors from around the world.

The festival will include a marathon, half marathon (that will again double as the national championships), 10km, 5km and 2km at Alexandra Headland from August 11 to 13, with most races on Sunday.

The festival, which started in 2012, has gained a reputation as one of the most popular marathon events in Australia because of its world-class facilities and stunning coastal routes, which lead to fast times.

It has earned the prestigious World Label status from the International Association of Athletics Federation, attracting elite runners from around the world.

The World Label recognition also highlights the Sunshine Coast as a top-notch destination for marathon enthusiasts and reinforces the region’s commitment to promoting athletics and healthy living.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said the festival was one of the biggest events in the region and would boost the local economy.

“As one of the highlights of the Sunshine Coast’s major events calendar, it is really inspiring to see more than 8000 competitors racing along our coastline with thousands of spectators cheering them on along the course,” he said.

“Attracting new and returning athletes to this quality mass-participation sporting event brings an expected $4m economic benefit for our region and showcases our stunning destination.”

Atlas Events event director Jason Crowther said the event had come a long way in 12 years.

“We are thrilled to witness the tremendous growth and recognition of the Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival,” he said.

“This event has become a hallmark of our region, attracting participants and visitors from all corners of Australia and the globe, showcasing the beauty of the Sunshine Coast and our commitment to supporting a healthy and active community.

“The recognition of the Sunshine Coast as the host for the 2032 Olympic marathon further solidifies our reputation as a premier sporting destination.

“We extend our gratitude to the volunteers and participants for making this event a true celebration of athleticism and unity.

“We extend a warm welcome to all participants and spectators and look forward to celebrating your athletic achievements, community spirit and international runners’ camaraderie.”

The course includes a coastal run at Alexandra Headland.
