An online lotto purchase has made a Sunshine Coast man into an overnight millionaire – but he almost missed his huge win.
The man held one of the 10 division one-winning entries in Saturday’s Gold Lotto draw 4397, with each winner pocketing $1 million, but he at first believed he’d only bagged a minor prize.
“I was lounging on the couch after coming home from a night out and decided to check my entry,” he said.
“It was just one of those moments where I swiped and saw a few numbers and thought, ‘oh, maybe I won $100’.
“Then I double checked and checked once more … I think my jaw hit the floor at that point.
“You never expect to win division one, so it certainly ruffles your feathers when you realise it’s happened.
“I called the family together and said, ‘guys, you better brace yourselves’.

“It’s going to change our lives. I’ll be able to do some work on the house, book an overseas holiday and help the kids prepare for the future too.
“What an amazing few days. Thank you so much!”
His winning 36-game QuickPick was purchased at thelott.com, with the winning numbers 11, 9, 14, 29, 7 and 15, and supplementary numbers 17 and 23.
It continues a hot streak of recent lotto wins for Sunshine Coast punters, including a $2.5m win last week and back-to-back million-dollar-plus wins in June and July.
The winner of a $1 million reward is still at large, after purchasing a successful Gold Lotto ticket at a Sunshine Coast newsagency in late 2016.
The Lott’s division one-winning tally has now reached 290 so far in 2023.
In the last financial year, Saturday Gold Lotto created 158 millionaires across Australia.
In that time there was more than 137.7 million wins worth more than $4 billion across The Lott, which includes Saturday Gold Lotto, Monday and Wednesday Gold Lotto, Powerball, Oz Lotto, Set for Life, Lucky Lotteries, Keno (SA), Super 66, Lotto Strike and Instant Scratch-Its.
Last financial year, Australia’s official lotteries contributed more than $1.6 billion via state lottery taxes and donations to help community initiatives such as hospitals, health research, disaster relief and education.
