Thousands of people are set to take part in the annual Walk for Daniel, to start Australia’s largest child safety education and awareness day.
People from far and wide will converge for the 19th edition of the 4km walk from Suncoast Christian College in Woombye to Briggs Park in Palmwoods, on Friday, October 27, from 6am.
The walk is the opening event of the the Daniel Morcombe Foundation’s national day of action, Day for Daniel.
The walk follows the same path that Daniel walked from Palmwoods to Nambour Connection Road in Woombye, where he waited for the bus to the Sunshine Plaza before being abducted. It symbolises a trip home Daniel was not able to complete.
Bruce and Denise Morcombe thanked walkers in advance.
“We are truly appreciative of all those who attend the Walk for Daniel,” Mr Morcombe said.
“This helps us continue Daniel’s legacy and launches Day for Daniel.”
Mr Morcombe added: “This is my favourite day of the year, and our walk is the most memorable event. We wear red in memory of Daniel.”
The Walk for Daniel is again supported by BOQ Maroochydore.
BOQ Maroochydore manager Nicholas Barker said there should be a focus on keeping kids, families and communities safe.
“As a father of three I feel very strongly about keeping my kids and all kids safe across Australia,” he said.
“The work that the foundation does in keeping kids safe is paramount and we encourage as many as people as possible to register their interest in Walk for Daniel today.”
Walk attendees have been encouraged to park at the finish of the walk (at Palmwoods Warriors Football Club on Jubilee Drive) and catch the free shuttle bus to the start of the walk. No dogs are allowed to travel on the buses. Children under 14 years of age should be supervised. Attendees can register via Daniel Morcombe Foundation.
Day for Daniel includes a variety of fundraising events and initiatives nationwide.
It is estimated that more than two million people from around Australia will participate in Day for Daniel this year.
This includes people at more than 7100 schools and early learning centres, and hundreds of businesses, public and private events.
Parents, teachers and carers can visit the Daniel Morcombe Foundation website for free resources and information on how to keep kids safe.
