Sunshine Coast residents can now play a much bigger role in helping police track down car thieves, as well as finding stolen vehicles and possibly reuniting them with their owners.
The Queensland Police Service (QPS) this week launched an online portal giving the public access to the latest information on active stolen vehicles across the state for the first time.
The database initiative aims to inform members of the public of vehicles that may be in their area and allow for the timely reporting of location information that can assist police.
Information listed for vehicles reported as stolen includes the make, model, colour, registration number and suburb from which it was taken.

The information on the webpage is updated daily, listed by the latest date.
A search function is also available, which allows the public to search for a registration, to confirm if a suspicious vehicle in their area is stolen.
As of Wednesday morning, the active stolen vehicle list, which can be accessed on the QPS website, included 22 vehicles throughout the Sunshine Coast and Noosa region.
The majority of those vehicles were cars but also included motorcycles, box and boat trailers and a boat.

In any given month, social media posts on the Coast are littered with stolen vehicles.
Cara Szabo told Sunshine Coast Crime Alerts and Discussion on January 11:”Stolen car – Bokarina, Sunshine Coast. Our house was broken into overnight and our Landcruiser stolen. White Toyota Landcruiser (2000 series) – rego 709GCB. Reported but if anyone sees it, please let me know. (Car currently has black roof racks but nothing on them).”
That vehicle (pictured above) appears on the current stolen vehicles portal and is still missing.
Russell Thompson told the Bokarina Beach Community Connection Facebook page two days before Christmas: “Four cars have been stolen from the Wurtulla area over last couple of days. It is a juvenile gang working the area. They are casing the area looking for targets. They break into houses in the early hours when occupants are sleeping searching for car keys. Once they locate the keys the car is gone…”
That vehicle, a 2017 White Toyota LandCruiser (pictured above), appears on the current stolen vehicles portal and is still missing.
“Information from the public plays a crucial part in investigations, and this gives the community greater tools to tell police the active movements of stolen vehicles and the actions of those behind the wheel,” he said.
“If you see a suspicious vehicle, members of the community can utilise this webpage, provide information to police and allow officers to take action.”
Organisational Capability Command acting assistant commissioner Paul Hart said the automatic digital refresh of the page each day would ensure the public had the most up-to-date information.
“The active stolen vehicle list has been about a year in the making and will be regularly reviewed and enhanced by our team to make sure police can most effectively partner with the community,” he said.
If a number plate on the vehicle is false or stolen, it may not appear on the stolen vehicle list. The database only includes those vehicles that have been reported stolen to police.
