A born-and-raised Sunshine Coast resident who has worked in real estate for the past seven years has declared his candidacy for Division 8 in the upcoming Sunshine Coast Council elections.
Walter Johnson is advocating for more open communication between the council, residents and various organisations to ensure cohesive progress.
In a media release, Mr Johnson said he was raised in a family deeply committed to community service, and would bring a unique blend of local passion, commitment and connection to the forefront of his campaign.
Mr Johnson’s formative years were spent between the beaches of Marcoola and Mudjimba. His parents, Phil and Debbie Johnson, were involved in various local initiatives, including the initiation of the Marcoola Market, which they ran for nearly four years before passing it on to its current owner.
Mr Johnson said he understood the importance of energy and focus from his real estate career.
“I’d like to believe I’m a strong communicator, as I understand how key wording can keep someone calm or hold a deal together when it threatens to fall through,” he said.
“I’d like to see more open communication between council, residents and organisations to make sure we are all moving in the same direction.”
When asked about the top priorities for Division 8, Mr Johnson highlighted three key areas.
He emphasised the need for balanced and sustainable development in commercial and residential areas, citing projects like Twin Waters West, the Sekisui site in Yaroomba and the Pacific Paradise Bowls Club site.
He also underlined the importance of coastal and sand dune protection to preserve the natural beauty of the region.
And he expressed concern for flood plans, particularly in low-lying areas along the coast.
Mr Johnson said his motivations to run for council were grounded in his passion for the area, his commitment to being a good listener and advocate for residents, and his ability to build strong connections within the community.
He said he believed his age and deep community ties uniquely positioned him to serve Division 8 effectively.
Division 8 includes Coolum Beach, Marcoola, part of Maroochydore, Mount Coolum, Mudjimba, Pacific Paradise, Point Arkwright, Twin Waters and Yaroomba.
The division is currently held by Jason O’Pray, who is set to run for mayor.
The election is on March 16.
