Work has begun on an important pedestrian bridge that will link a pending housing development with one of the Sunshine Coast’s newest parks.
Stockland, the Kawana Waters development area master developer, has started works on a pedestrian bridge at North Birtinya as part of its development agreement with Sunshine Coast Council.
The pedestrian bridge will be 67 metres long and six metres wide.
It’s scheduled to be completed early next year.
In a statement, a Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said the bridge was included as part of the development application.
“It will provide direct access from the park adjacent to Southbank Parkway – where the new playground is located – to the Birtinya Town Centre precinct,” the spokesperson said.
“The project will enhance Birtinya’s existing active transport network and provide connections to future infrastructure to be delivered by Stockland, including additional walkable waterfront networks and key pedestrian linkages through the Town Centre precinct.
“Arrangements will be in place to ensure safe and convenient interim connections linking this new pedestrian bridge to Kawana Way and to Stockland Birtinya Shopping Centre are available upon completion of the pedestrian bridge construction works.”
Stockland said it would keep the community updated as works progress.
“Stockland has commenced works on a pedestrian bridge at Southbank Park as part of our work with Sunshine Coast Council, which will ultimately create an active and connected network around Birtinya,” a spokesperson for the company said.
