Motorists will have an extra set of traffic lights to contend with along Maroochydore’s Bradman Avenue later this year.

The new lights will be part of $7 million of improvements by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) at two intersections on the busy thoroughfare.

The lights will be installed at the Diura Street intersection, where the left slip lane will be modified and a new, signallised pedestrian crossing will go in.

The signals and pedestrian crossings at the Denna Street intersection are also due for improvement, and a bike lane will be created between Kuran and Denna streets.

A TMR statement said a section of Bradman Avenue would be resurfaced and “car parking adjustments made” as part of the works.

The statement said the changes were key to ensuring a more efficient and safer road for the growing community in the area, including pedestrians and active transport users.

The works, which are due to commence in the middle of this year, weather permitting, are jointly funded by the federal and state governments.

TMR regional director Scott Whitaker said Bradman Avenue was an important east-west connection, as well as a link to the Sunshine Motorway and a tourist route.

“Road safety is TMR’s top priority. Bradman Avenue and Diura Street is a critical intersection for both the local community and tourists, and the new traffic signals will improve safety for all road users,” Mr Whitaker said.

“Works to improve the nearby Denna Street intersection will also assist with traffic flow along this busy section of the network.”
