A special event featuring dance and digeridoo will launch National Reconciliation Week on the Sunshine Coast.
Community members have been invited to the family-friendly gathering, which will include food, performances, activities and First Nations speakers.
Attendees will converge for a bonfire, see a welcome dance by Deerum Wandum Dance, witness a yidiki (digeridoo) demonstration and join art workshops with Libby Harward from Munimba-ja and Kerry Neill from TribalLink.
The event will be held the TribalLink Cultural Activity Centre at Mapleton on Monday, May 27, from 3.30pm.
National Reconciliation Week, which runs from May 27 to June 3, will celebrate achievements in Australia’s journey towards reconciliation. Many events will be held nationwide.
This year’s theme, Now More Than Ever, will serve as a reminder that the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continues.
The event, and the week, will provide an opportunity for the community to reflect on the importance of National Reconciliation Week.
Sunshine Coast mayor Rosanna Natoli said council placed a high priority on building stronger relationships with First Nations peoples.
“We value their cultures and heritage and their contribution to the social fabric of our community,” she said.
“We’re encouraging our community to come together to celebrate the start of National Reconciliation Week and the achievements, commitments and partnerships with the First Nations community.
“Events like these help us to build strong and respectful relationships.
“National Reconciliation Week brings council and our key stakeholders together to support and celebrate reconciliation efforts.”
