A man is in custody after allegedly rampaging through Kawana Shoppingworld with a pair of scissors threatening people late this morning.

The man was restrained by members of the public near a crossing outside the centre until police arrived after receiving multiple 000 calls about 11.40am.

A woman working in one of the shops in the centre said a man had stormed into the House kitchen store, where a friend of hers was working, demanding a knife.

“He wanted a knife. They wouldn’t open up the cabinet. Then he smashed everything in the shop,” she said.

The woman said the man then demanded scissors and left the store, running through the centre.

“It was bloody awful.”

The woman said store owners locked up and people were running everywhere while the man was on the loose in the centre.

“Everybody was in here. They were in every shop. I told them to get in the back.”

She said she had no idea what had prompted the man’s behaviour.

Police later walked around advising it was all clear to open up but the centre was deserted, she said.

“I was supposed to close at 4pm. I’m going to close up at 3pm. I don’t feel very good,” she said.

Kawana Shoppingworld was contacted for comment.

Police said nobody was physically injured in the incident.
