Locals have been invited to have their say on the creation of a new recreation park in a growing hinterland town.
Community feedback will form the blueprint for the long-term development of the district-level Maleny District Park, which is expected to be a multi-stage, multi-year project.
Councillor Winston Johnston said residents’ ideas and feedback were integral to its formation.
“We are developing a concept plan for a new district recreation park which will complement the other recreation offerings in the Maleny Community Precinct,” he said.
“There are so many reasons why we love Maleny – our vibrant town centre, it’s close to great walking trails and nature, and has a strong and active community.
“The new district park will be a place for the Maleny community to come and enjoy the outdoors together.
“In order to build the ideal park for the Maleny community, we want to understand how you would like to use the park, what you would like to see included, your priorities for the park and the look and feel you want for the park design.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how our community will help shape a new district park in Maleny and how it will support local businesses by encouraging visitors to explore the township.
“This is a great opportunity to help shape the future of the Maleny District Park as we connect and engage with our communities to build a better future for everyone.”
Community members can have a say by completing a short online survey at Have Your Say Sunshine Coast until August 12, or meet the design team in person at the front of Queensland Country Bank in Maple Street on Saturday, July 27, from 9am to 1pm.
Sunshine Coast Council endorsed the Maleny Community Precinct Master Plan in 2010. The plan addresses the future planning and development of former farmland for the purpose of recreation for the Maleny community.
Over the years, changes to the plan, sought by the community and approved via council resolutions, have amended the layout of the precinct.
Feedback will help council to prepare a draft concept plan for the park. Once complete, council will invite the community to provide feedback on the draft concept plan.
It is envisaged the district park concept plan will be implemented in a staged approach through several avenues, including council’s capital works program, developer contributions, the local community and State and Federal Government grants programs.
There is currently $900,000 allocated for stage one of the park’s design and implementation in council’s 10-year capital works program. This ongoing funding is subject to council endorsement each financial year.
