A section of undulating and twisting road that is utilised by an increasing number of motorists is set to get significant improvements.
A 660m stretch of Commissioners Flat Road will be worked on from later this year until June, to create a smoother and safer drive for travellers.
Sunshine Coast Council’s 2024-25 budget included $1.5 million for the project between Butlers Lane and Reserve Lane, west of Peachester.
The planned improvements include upgrades to lengthen the narrow culvert, changes to the road alignment to provide a gentler road curve, and widening the road to provide better visibility and more space.
Commissioners Flat Road has become a more popular route and a shortcut for many people who would otherwise travel along Peachester Road and Kilcoy-Beerwah Road.
Councillor Jenny Broderick said the section of road needed upgrading and outlined when works could be done.
“These changes come as a result of a detailed road safety audit and reflect our commitment to addressing community concerns,” she said.
“This road has seen an increase in traffic as a result of the ongoing road repairs required on the state-managed Kilcoy-Beerwah Road.
“Construction can only start after Energex has relocated certain utilities, a process that requires a significant amount of time to complete.
“We expect we can start construction later this year and aim to finish by June 2025, weather permitting.
“Prior to works starting we will keep our community informed through project updates which will cover construction details, traffic management and other relevant details.”
Cr Broderick thanked the community ahead of the road works.
“We appreciate your patience as we work towards making Peachester a safer place to travel,” she said.
The owner and manager of nearby Peachester Fuel and General Store Manish Patel told Sunshine Coast News the works should make a big difference for locals and travellers.
“Many vehicles use that road … an upgrade will make it better,” he said.
“Anything that can make it safer and more accessible is a good thing.”
