A block that contained two homes has been transformed into a 16-unit social housing complex.
Tenants are settling into their new homes at Caloundra, which have been built over three levels and made accessible for older Queenslanders and people with a disability.
They were delivered as part of the state government’s Homes for Queenslanders plan.
It follows a number of social housing projects across the Sunshine Coast, including new homes at Yandina, Little Mountain and Beerwah. Construction is also underway on projects at Nirimba and Maroochydore.
Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon also recently announced that a proposal by affordable housing provider BHC, for 90 homes at Birtinya, had been lodged to go through one of the state’s fast-track approval processes.
Another 100-plus homes have the green light to receive funding through the state government’s Incentivising Infill Development Fund, to help pay for essential infrastructure like water, parks and roads, and build sooner.
New tenant Neville Wulff was keen to make the most of his new home.
“I love it. The layout of the complex and design, it’s absolutely perfect,” he said.
“I’ve been renting for the past few years and as an 84-year-old man living on the pension, I don’t need the worry and concern about rental increases and cost of living expenses.
“This unit is mine. I don’t have rent worries anymore.
“I’m a keen fisherman and I’m now close to Moffatt Beach, so I’m looking forward to going fishing if I want or just wandering down to the village for a coffee and watch the world go by.
“My family are helping me move and they’re really happy with the unit as well.
“They’re getting plenty of comfort from my happiness, as well as the safety and support features the complex provides.”
Ms Scanlon said the social housing building at Caloundra showed more homes were being delivered.
“What was once two houses in Caloundra has been turned into 16 more accessible homes for older Queenslanders and people with a disability,” she said.
Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt welcomed the complex.
“I’m thrilled this site now offers 16 homes for people in our community instead of just two, but at the same time also retains a mango tree from its past, which is now an area for residents to gather,” he said.
“Importantly, this place is well-located, being close to local shops, services and public transport for our new tenants.”
