With more people heading to the coast for the holidays, lifeguards and volunteer surf lifesavers are urging everyone to prioritise safety in the surf.
Statistics show that the risk of drowning doubles during the festive period, and young adults aged 16-39 remain the most at risk, with reckless behaviour contributing to an increase in drownings.
“We want everyone to have a fun and safe Christmas holiday, but history shows that this is a time when people tend to take unnecessary risks, like swimming in unpatrolled areas or mixing alcohol and drugs with swimming,” SLSQ lifesaving services manager Natalie Edwards said.
“We urge everyone to play it safe this holiday season – swim at a patrolled beach, listen to lifeguard/Lifesavers advice, and make safety your priority.”
