What an absolute disgrace. Whoever made the decision to cancel midnight fireworks and give us that pittance of a display at 8.30pm: six minutes you gave the community.

The council should be ashamed of themselves. If this was for saving money then I’m sure you can budget for it. If it was for the minority, then you really need to stop the woke s**t this world is turning into. Most people want to celebrate into the new year with a bang – 15 minutes would be great.

You really need to have better excuses than the environment, the minority and the cost. People have suffered a lot in the last few years and just want to have some enjoyment. Help give them that. Happy new year, hopefully.

Also, work on the traffic that is leaving Mooloolaba and the Spit. I’m quite positive that children could direct traffic better. I haven’t been in a car down that way for five years, but there’s been lots of complaints on social media.

The resident Mark Newman is 100 per cent correct. The rock breaking has been going on for months.

I am not directly affected as I live further afield but for the councillor to say it’s only been happening for a week is total rubbish.

Walk along the boardwalk from the showgrounds to town you can hear it very clearly. How schoolkids concentrate in class is beyond me.

Danielle, Booroobin

I also am very aware of the penetrating noise of the rock breaking at The Enclave.

It has been going on for five days from 7am to 4pm, plus some Saturdays, for months.

Councillor Johnston mustn’t live in Maleny.

Also, my concern is that it may start up again as before unless council actually considers the Maleny residents impacted by this consistent ‘war zone’ noise.

John Shean, Maleny

I like Winston Johnston but his statement is so wildly incorrect.

At least a month ago I approached the inconsiderate people doing the disturbance and provided them with details of noise-mitigation equipment that costs less than $2000 and could have a significant effect. They ignored me and carried on.

I’m glad this has come up now because if it isn’t stopped I’m going to step into protest mode.

The people of Maleny are generous, that is the only reason it’s gone on this long.

Steven Thompson, Maleny

How wonderful to see Francine Wiig has stepped up to provide a real independent choice for the Sunshine Coast.

I’m so tired of political games and influence from vested interests over both major political parties. We have seen the results of independents such as Helen Haines in Indi successfully achieving a federal Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). Wouldn’t it be great to have someone from our region truly representing our community’s interests for a change.

  • Be kind in 2025

Over Christmas, I watched the reactions to my 20-month-old grandson waving his
pudgy little hands furiously to people having to work.

A garbage truck driver waved his gnarly hands and front forks, bringing a smile to the
little man’s face, especially when he tooted. Kindness is contagious. When rubbish spilled, a young bloke jumped out of his car to help the old truckie gather up the mess.

Acts of kindness can have a ripple effect across our community. If enough of us have a go, we can join the ripples into waves of kindness to outweigh the powerful negative forces outside our control and our country that affect our daily lives. Small gestures given often and by many can shape our community. These moments of compassion remind us of our shared humanity and ability to make a difference in each other’s lives.

Let’s thrive in ’25, through creating waves of kindness.

Garry Reynolds, Peregian Springs
