A former Bonza airlines captain has announced his intention to run as an independent candidate in the federal election.
Eumundi local Paul McKeown issued a press release stating he would vie for the seat of Fairfax, which includes his hometown and Maroochydore, Coolum Beach, Nambour and Buderim.
The seat has been held by the LNP’s Ted O’Brien since 2016.
Mr McKeown said he aimed to be a “reliable, professional and fearless representative”.
He said his experience in aviation and small business would bolster his candidacy and he offered “a fresh alternative to voters who are sick of party politics and the career politicians who are dragging our nation backwards”.
He said he was eager to help “restore national pride, revitalise sovereignty, end cultural and economic divisions and boost productivity”.
Mr McKeown outlined some of his priorities.
“We need to urgently address our inadequate infrastructure, end the cost-of-living crisis, and give our children a stake in the future of the Sunshine Coast and hinterland,” he said.
He also stressed the importance of supporting small businesses and workers “whilst not forgetting to look after those most in need.”
Mr McKeown said he believed in “freedom of speech and creativity, and an independent and unbiased science, academia, public service, and press.”

He also said “good planning” was required “to protect the environment”.
“People have a right to enjoy the natural environment without undue restriction,” he said.
Mr McKeown is the second person to announce their intentions to run as an independent candidate in Fairfax.
Small business owner Francine Wiig, who has a background in law, is also set to contest the seat.
