- Read the story: Group issues plea to reassess foreshore project
People go to the beach for the beach, not a park.
This plan will narrow the sand area and increase the lawn park area. Removal of 150 car parks with high-rise parking two blocks away won’t encourage families with children to visit the beach. Who wants to drag children and beach stuff to and from the beach, and for the elderly and physically challenged this will not be easy either. Drop-off points won’t solve the problem.
Not everyone will share my thoughts but, as an octogenarian and understanding grandmother, Alex and Maroochydore are much more likely to be our choice when, and if, the revamp happens.
This is Australia, not the south of France.
This is part of the agenda from the last council. I thought this was to be reviewed. Possibly, with the 1500 new residents on the Coast in the past 18 months, many people aren’t aware of the problems this plan will cause.

Sadly, the date for destruction of our beautiful Mooloolaba Beach is almost upon us.

- Read the story: Fire ants extend reach on Sunshine Coast
We need leaflets with clear photos of fire ants available at supermarkets, service stations and bottle shops.
This way, if a nest is suspected in the community we are less likely to waste the limited fire ant staff on false reports and therefore the team can be fully effective in the field.
Time is highly valuable in this invasion as they are highly mobile and rapidly expanding territories.
Raymond Cowell, Buderim
Heaven help us, this is just too silly for words and how long before pollies wake up to the fact that Biosecurity Queensland (BQ) and the national program are simply failing as they have done since day one, and yet they give themselves plaudits to suggest what a wonderful job they are doing.
This outside-in strategy is not new, they have done this before and it, as will this one, simply failed, as it is about their field practices.
The use of insect growth regulators is a joke. I have lost count of how many times they have spread these products in my local park over the past six years and it has not made any difference at all. It is the easy option, when given the funding, to use choppers and the like to put down this product and suggest that by doing so they have successfully treated X thousand acres. These products do not target fire ants only, and black native ants are killed also.
I have been fighting this battle for 15 years and personally treated thousands of fire ant nests in my voluntary capacity.

- Read the story: ‘Run out of money’: homeless charity forced to fold
There is absolutely no reason for Sleepbus Maroochydore not to continue to deliver relief to homeless people, because a simple solution is in sight.
Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie was on Wednesday night’s local news agreeing it was an absolute shame to be seeing this community service fold.
The solution is very simple. Just divert a portion of the LNP’s recent Sunshine Coast election pork barrelling ($10 million to Kawana Surf Life Saving Club, $2.5 million to Beerwah Golf Club) to the Sleepbus project.
After all, this is taxpayers’ money the successful candidates were wildly throwing around before the election, so perhaps now is a wonderful opportunity to correct the campaign tactics while giving security to an additional community service that is in need of urgent financial support.
All three community groups would still be viable.
Jeff Taylor, CurrimundiÂ
What a tragedy, a vital local charity cause doomed through lack of funding.
Anthony Albanese has promised billions of dollars, sends millions of dollars overseas and yet lets his own people suffer.
It’ll be interesting to see what the ‘community’-minded Teal candidates here have to offer in practical terms.

- Read the story: More over-water flights wanted in bid to reduce aircraft noise
When can the traveling public expect the long-overdue upgrade to the existing inadequate Sunshine Coast Airport terminal facility?
Overcrowding, poor seating, congestion at gates, no skybridge and terrible PA system are just a few of the substandard conditions. With the proposed increase in Jetstar flight schedules and increased international flights to NZ, action is needed.
This current facility does not meet expectations of the Sunshine Coast experience for local or international travellers, as the Gold Coast Airport continues to attract more international competition.
Management, wake up.

- Read the story: Proposed sport complex could create 300 jobs by 2027
What a great idea. Since the closure of Pelican Waters to members, as well as limited golf membership on the Sunshine Coast, this area is starved for places to play and enjoy golf.
We really hope this proposal receives council approval. Excellent. Cannot wait.
Diane Garvey, Pelican Waters
I think this project sounds great, as long as there will be easy access to enter and leave the facility.
But I also think a nice, big public pool would be a great idea too, as the one at Ingenia is always overloaded. There is a big call for more swimming facilities around the area.

- Read the story: Caravan and camping numbers ‘boom’
It is great that our region is seeing an increased usage of our many varied camping options.
The article mentions some council-run campgrounds now being pet-friendly. I am not sure that the council sees this as a caring type initiative or just an opportunity to garner more in fees.
I saw recently the Coolum Beach park was charging $5 per night for a dog to stay. This would seem hard to justify when you consider the dogs don’t use the shower or toilet blocks, owners have to pick up after their dogs, and all dogs must be on leash at all times.
I also noted this park had recently obtained a mini tractor to assist those caravanners who ask for help parking their caravans. But there is a fee of course for this assistance. I have stayed in many privately-run caravan parks where dogs stay free, and where tractor parking is provided as an assistance for free. It should also be considered this tractor assistance negates any disputes over each caravan site placement and lessens any traffic hold-ups to a minimum.
Sorry Sunshine Coast Council, not everything provided needs to be a fee-generating golden egg.

- Parking problem
It is about time council got rid of cars and boats on council land (parkland and nature reserves) in Gippsland Place. Fine them. It’s a disaster.

- Digital coup
Have our lives been captured in a silent coup by an army of digital devices?
At 9pm, do we scan our phone weather radar to see if we can do the washing for tomorrow because the electricity digital smart meter says it’s cheaper?
In an era where our smart fridge knows us better than our neighbour, is the line between convenience and dependency becoming finer?
Survival used to be about half a bed and three meals a day. Now it’s about remembering a maze of obscure passwords to give a digital two-finger salute to scammers shadowing us through every keystroke captured by algorithms.
I won’t ring up Mum to check on that recipe, I’ll just Google it.
I hope she’s alright, I must email her cute kitten and puppy reels so she knows I’m thinking of her, which reminds me to look up air fryer reviews to spam Mum to get one.
I need to enter my digital vote on the national crises on cabanas occupying beaches and should pineapple go on pizza as this could lead to digital armageddon with Italian nonnas.
The fear of missing out is no longer about coffee with friends but a viral moment on Facebook. I don’t want to be uncool by not knowing which celebrity has dropped who overnight.
Speaking of overnight, Siri is saying I must get the washing on, and do I want my late-night Spotify playlist?
Yes, Siri, as tomorrow is Wednesday, I’ll stay up to one minute past midnight so I can get the latest specials ordering my online groceries.
