A federal election candidate on the Sunshine Coast says free school meals would help ease the strain on many local families.
The Greens have pledged to provide breakfast and lunch to every child in public schools across the country.
The party’s candidate for Fisher, Renay Wells, said the initiative would help many households in the region.
“Families across the Coast are doing it tough,” she said.
“Between rising rents, grocery prices and power bills, parents are stretched thin.
“Free school meals will lift a huge burden and ensure every child gets the nutrition they need to learn and thrive.”

Ms Wells said cost-of-living pressures were hurting people in areas like Caloundra West, Nambour and Beerwah.
“This is about dignity, equality and giving every kid a fair go,” she said.
“Public schools are at the heart of our communities and every child deserves the same shot, no matter their background.”
“This policy will have an immediate and lasting impact for families here on the Sunshine Coast.”
Ms Wells also backed the Greens’ plan to boost paid parental leave to 26 weeks.
“Australia has one of the least generous paid parental leave schemes in the developed world,” she said.
“It’s time we supported new parents properly, not just with words but with real, economic backing.”
She said the policy would have a positive impact for young families juggling mortgage stress, childcare waitlists and insecure work.

“This policy recognises the value of care. It means healthier babies, more time for bonding, better mental health and greater gender equality in the workplace and at home,” she said.
Media releases from Ms Wells stated that the plans would be delivered by “ending tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy and corporations”.
