A popular Sunshine Coast tourist attraction’s most iconic landmark has received a makeover.
After decades of faithful service, the 13-metre-high Dutch windmill at Amaze World has been restored to its former glory, with a new motor, cladding and blades, and the addition of lighting.
Originally situated at the Buderim Zoo and Koala Park on Tanawha Tourist Drive, the windmill found its new home at what was then known as Bellingham Maze in Tanawha in 1996.
Adam and Robyn Cheshire later bought the property and began a multimillion-dollar transformation of the park into Amaze World, which was unveiled in 2022.
The windmill renovation is part of a larger investment in modernising and expanding the attraction, which has seen the addition of new mazes, puzzles, playgrounds, mini-golf and augmented reality experiences inside the venue, along with enhanced dining and group facilities.
“We are thrilled to unveil the rejuvenated windmill to our visitors,” Mr Cheshire said.
“It’s not just a renovation, it’s a celebration of history and community. This iconic structure holds a special place in the hearts of Sunshine Coast locals and tourists alike, and we’re delighted to breathe new life into it.”

Ms Cheshire added: “The windmill has always been a symbol of adventure and discovery for those traveling through the Sunshine Coast.
“We’re excited to welcome both new and returning guests to experience the magic of Amaze World and its iconic windmill.”
Acting general manager Myra Williams added some more detail about the windmill renovations.
“Having come to our site in 1996, the windmill has stood silently as an icon without a lot of maintenance,” she said.
“All the cladding had to be replaced, the windmill blades (originally made of wood) were rotten and the hub that turns the blades was rusty.
“These parts all needed to be replaced, and a new motor was purchased recently to enable it to turn.”
“We started the recladding in April 2023 when we starting transforming the whole front area. Then once we completed some of the other works in the front area, including new puzzles, mazes and gardens, we ordered new steel blades and have now finished its exterior transformation.
“This includes beautiful lighting that transforms the windmill into a light display at night.”
Ms Williams said other improvements were planned for the future.
“One of the initiatives is to allow people to get inside the windmill and this project will add an iconic lolly, ice cream and drink shop that will open once completed during our busy periods,” she said.
“Other new additions include a large entry, exit, admissions, gift shop, cafe and office building that comes directly off the new bridge, and a large themed mini golf course towards the back of the property.
“We are also renewing our food and beverage choices, creating more event options and possibly opening on a Friday or Saturday night in the future to bring early evening family fun to the Coast.
“We also now have annual passes or school day passes available for locals to come and enjoy our venue continuously throughout the year.”
