Work will continue to upgrade Nambour’s Quota Memorial Park following the allocation of almost $1 million in the Sunshine Coast Council’s budget for 2024-25.
The allocation follows another of $947,000 in the last budget and more than $500,000 the year before on the skate park and other facilities there.
Work began in February on a new 3m wide footbridge across Petrie Creek to create a more accessible link between Quota Park and parkland on the other side.
A council spokesperson said the work ensured better connectivity to the skate park, the youth activity precinct, cenotaph and the parkland extension.
“Park improvements also include realigning, extending and renewing the footpath within Quota Park,” the spokesperson said.
“Sections of grassed area will be reshaped to improve drainage towards the creek with planting of additional trees and plants also planned.
“Works will also be done to revitalise the amphitheatre stage and terraced seating as well as realign and widen pathways through the park and install a new adjacent pathway and improve disability access to the parking area on Mathew Street.”
The works comprise stage two of the Petrie Creek Parklands Open Space Master Plan, which was endorsed by the council in 2017.
Stage one, which was finished in 2022, included a 1.7ha green space corridor from the Arundell Avenue car park to Crusher Park, near the Nambour Showgrounds
The spokesperson said this connected to Quota Memorial Park, offering family-friendly areas, connecting footpaths, 45,000 native trees and shrubs, creekside landscaping and open green spaces for the community to enjoy.
“Both stages are very natural and encourage our community to take a break from our busy work lives and our screens by relaxing and unwinding surrounded by nature,” the spokesperson said.
Stage two is expected to be completed in August following the decommissioning of the old footbridge.
