Police have charged a 40-year-old Birtinya man following a single-vehicle traffic crash on the Gold Coast last night.

About 11.34pm, police were called to reports of a Mazda6 crashed into a fence near the intersection of Crusader Way and Centurion Crescent, Nerang.

It is alleged the driver left the scene on foot. Police arrived and the driver was located a short time after and taken into custody.

The man has been charged with driving UIL, driving without a driver licence, driving without due care, possession of a knife and possession of a restricted item (baton).

He is due to appear in Southport Magistrates Court today.
