A large-scale affordable housing proposal could be fast-tracked via a new process that is designed to get homes off the ground in quick time.
In a first for the Sunshine Coast, an eight-storey complex proposed for Birtinya will be put through the state government’s Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID) process.
Brisbane Housing Company lodged the application for an MID for the project, which could include 90 affordable housing units by the water at 16 Bright Place, near the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.
The MID provides an alternative to local council development applications and is managed by the Department of Housing, Local Government, Planning and Public Works, with input from other government agencies.
Consultation is now open on the project, with the planning minister to make a final decision after reviewing the assessment undertaken by the department and community consultation feedback.
It comes after 40 homes were recently completed at Little Mountain in a partnership between the state government and Churches of Christ, as well as the purchase of homes exiting the National Rental Affordability Scheme in the Kawana electorate.
Planning Minister Meaghan Scanlon said cheaper homes were desperately required in the region.
“We need more affordable housing on the Sunshine Coast, it’s that simple,” she said.

“Through the MID process, we’re able to streamline the approvals needed for large social and affordable developments across the state, and get shovels in the ground faster.”
