Construction of a 169-unit retirement complex has begun, with the developer promising the project will deliver the Sunshine Coast’s first “vertical resort”.

The Plantation Retirement Resort at Baringa will feature three towers of between four and five storeys each, designed by John Robertson from Sunshine Coast-based OGE Group Architects.

Work started late last month on stage one, which includes the four-storey tower one with 52 two and three-bedroom units, as well as the community hall and swimming pool.

The project was approved in May by the state government, as part of the Caloundra South Priority Development Area, and registered in July.

Plantation Retirement Resort group general manager Marcus Shimbel said the complex would have an innovative design.

“Baringa is the first of its kind on the Sunshine Coast, with the retirement resort to be a vertical resort concept,” he said.

The resort will feature communal facilities between the three towers, including a pool.

“It will span three towers over as many stages and upon completion will have 169 units.

“It will incorporate the best of the flat resorts lifestyle in a vertical environment, (with) a large community hall and entertainment area as well as swimming pool, barbecue area and pickleball court.

“It will be designed so that all the towers have natural light throughout the building, with a resort hotel atrium feel with internal gardens and open space.

“The resort will have live-in managers on site as well as residents’ bus for activities and shopping.”

Stage one is expected to be complete in mid to late 2025, with upwards of 120 people employed in construction and sales.

Mr Shimbel did not provide an approximate cost for the project.

All units will have a private balcony and an allocated secure ground-level car parking space.

The complex will be across Baringa Drive from the Stockland Baringa shopping centre, and close to the Baringa Tavern and Aura’s extensive parklands and recreational facilities.

The complex will be built in three stages, with the first stage now underway.

“We are excited to be a part of the Aura/Baringa community and to provide a lifestyle resort for over-50s so our residents can be close to their families and grandchildren that have made the move to this beautiful part of the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Shimbel said.

The resort will be at 10 Lukin Terrace, Baringa. A sales office is open on site from 10am-2pm Tuesday to Saturday.
