A bakery that began as a hobby during Covid has moved to new premises after it outgrew its original base.
Sunshine Coast Sourdough Co owner Gregory Turner is originally from the UK but wanted to bring his passion for sourdough to Australia.
“I learnt to cook from my mum, Janie, who is a passionate cook and cookbook writer,” Mr Turner said.
“I moved to Australia in 2018 with my wife Laura. In March 2020 during the early stages of Covid I found myself baking more and more sourdough in the spare time I had.”
The bakery, which opened in November 2021, was originally based at Kayleigh Drive in Buderim, but Mr Turner said the move was needed.
“We simply outgrew the space and could not keep up with the demand, often selling out within the first few hours of opening,” he said.
The new bakery location, at Glen Kyle Drive in Buderim, has been in the works for almost two years.
“I first set my eyes on the Glen Kyle Drive location in early 2023. It took a long time to find somewhere in the surrounding area of Wises Road,” Mr Turner said.
“The premises needed a big overhaul and we couldn’t be happier with the end result.”
The business is known for its sourdough but it also offers other baked goods for customers to enjoy.
“All our bread is sourdough and 36-hour fermented and made with organic flour,” Mr Turner said.
“We also offer a range of croissant pastries made with an incredible Australian butter, Pepe Saya, and we make all the wholemeal puff pastry that is used in our quiches, sausage rolls and Portuguese tarts.
“We are passionate about using wholegrains, which have incredible flavour and nutritional value, in all our recipes – even the cookies.
“We also stock housemade pickles, preserves and delicious deli products like salami, butter and olives.”
The move has also facilitated some changes to the business.
“The bakery is now open four days a week, from Wednesday to Saturday, 6am to 1pm,” Mr Turner said.
“We offer a weekly sourdough special rotation. Some examples include house-marinated olive; walnut and cranberry; purple wheat heritage and more.
“We will retain our online pre-ordering system – this is the best way to ensure our customers don’t miss out on their favourite products.”
Mr Turner said he was excited about the new location and had hopes of expanding in the future.
“For now we are just super excited to be able to serve our community with flavoursome and nourishing food alongside delicious barista coffee,” he said.
“In the future we would love to expand and open more sites whilst providing other Sunshine Coast businesses with our products.”
