A high-profile beachside location has been transformed into a new Thai restaurant with its own pool area and a menu designed by a renowned chef.
Funky Wok has opened on Alexandra Parade at Alexandra Headland, taking over the former Black Bunny Cafe space within the BreakFree Beach Resort complex.
Nanthaphon ‘Pui’ Petwiwat and her partner Pukrit ‘Oat’ Srithingzai, who has run a Thai restaurant in northern New South Wales for the past 13 years, were keen to bring flavours of their homeland to the Coast.
“My partner has a restaurant at Casuarina called Spice Den and he’s passionate about bringing that flavour to the Sunshine Coast,” Pui said.
“After searching extensively we found this prime location in Alex, which perfectly aligns with his vision.”
Pui said the menu was created by a Michelin-starred chef who has featured on reality TV cooking shows.
“Our menu was originally designed by our creative soul chef David Thompson many years ago,” she said.
“It remains modern and innovative yet deeply inspired by our motherland, showcasing dishes full of fresh herbs and bold flavours.
“One of our highlight dishes is beef rib slow-cooked and steamed for 18 hours, topped with a refreshing salad and our signature homemade sauce.”
The restaurant had its grand opening on Thursday after initially doing a soft launch. Pui said it had taken months to set up the space, which is divided into four distinct sections.
“There’s fine dining: for those seeking an elegant and elevated experience; Funky Bar: a loving spot to unwind with creative cocktails and drinks; the courtyard: a relaxed outdoor space perfect for casual dining; and the pool area: a chill zone with a resort-like vibe,” she said.

“This mix of spaces allows us to cater to different moods and occasions, creating something truly special for our guests.
“It took us a solid four months to get everything just right but luckily we have a great landlord and of course my partner, who has been by my side every step of the way, offering constant support.
“We’re excited about the future and hope to hire more than 20 local staff as the business grows and gets busier.
“Our dream is to create a food destination for the Sunny Coast, a place where locals and visitors alike can enjoy exceptional food and a unique dining experience.”
