A former Queensland Architect of the Year’s notable range residence is for sale.
Edwin Codd’s The Montville House, in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, has been listed by Re/Max Hinterland.
Mr Codd built the five-bedroom, three-bathroom, two-garage home in 2012.
It’s set on 4107sqm at 65-69 Main Street, Montville.
Mr Codd, who is renowned for his functionalist and materialist design philosophy, has received multiple awards for his contributions to architecture and design.
His accolades include a Member of the Order of Australia (2018), the Prince Phillip Prize for Australian Design (1984), Queensland Architect of the Year (2000) and Design Institute of Australia Hall of Fame induction (2007).
He has held key positions with the Australian Institute of Architects, Australian Academy of Design and Industrial Design Council of Australia, as well as the University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology, where he was the inaugural head of the School of Built Environment in 1975.
In 1964, Mr Codd designed his own house in Brisbane, pioneering the use of steel construction in the city. His expertise was recognised by the Department of Public Works, leading to his involvement in an extensive school building program.
The two-level Montville House, built in 2012, reflects his design philosophy.

The residence, perched high on Main Street in Montville, combines architectural brilliance with natural beauty and it has spectacular views.
Mr Codd emphasised the importance of working with the land.
“The whole building was designed, as buildings should be designed, to respond to the site,” he said.
One of the striking features of the house is its steel frame construction, the technique he pioneered in residential architecture.
Flooring is North American maple, sourced from leftover stumps, providing durability and environmental sustainability.
Perforated corrugated iron, a novel application that Mr Codd first developed for a courthouse, provides acoustic benefits and ventilation in external ceilings.
External cladding is Alucobond, typically used in high-rise buildings, and chosen for its longevity and low maintenance requirements.
Mr Codd said an intimate knowledge of construction materials was required by home designers – to consider strength, hardness, formability, mouldability, longevity and resistance to deterioration, with methods of processing.
“Material properties and processing methodologies drive form and the aesthetic expression of my work,” he said.
“To use an example, I would expect a house based on a steel structure to be entirely different in its architecture to one based on timber, brick or concrete.”
Mr Codd paid special attention to lighting in the home, with up-lighting to highlight ceilings and create ambiance and a central skylight.
He said it created “a sense of intrigue, because you can’t easily see where the light’s coming from”.
Much of the bespoke furniture in the home is made by Mr Codd, who is selling the house due to declining health.
The north-facing residence includes spacious open-plan living areas, a four-bed attic retreat, entertainer’s deck, rainwater tank storage, gated security, on-site wastewater treatment system and landscaped gardens.
