A new parkrun on the Sunshine Coast is fast becoming a favourite.

The first edition of the Birtinya Island parkrun attracted more than 460 participants in mid-January and the event has continued to lure droves of people since.

It is one of several free parkruns that are held on the Sunshine Coast on Saturday mornings.

The course includes a loop around the island, offering views of Lake Kawana.

Event director Kerinda Camilleri said the new parkrun had already “become a special place for runners of all levels”.

“Since its official launch, Birtinya Island parkrun has consistently attracted high attendance and positive feedback,” she said.

“The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with strong friendships formed between participants, who return each week for the sense of camaraderie and support.”

Runners, joggers and walkers start their 5km journeys at the park at Southbank Parkway.

They head west and south, turn at Prosperity Drive Park, and return to the start/finish area, before they complete a clockwise loop of the island.

Participants celebrate the new parkrun at Birtinya Island.

“The course, designed to be fast and scenic, is situated along a wide pathway surrounded by water, playgrounds and barbecue facilities, making it an ideal spot for families,” Ms Camilleri said.

“The course features a slight incline known as ‘Heartbreak Hill’ and a blind corner dubbed the ‘Danger Zone’, which adds to its unique character.”

The average finishing time was 33min 46sec after three editions.

The course includes a 1.5km out-and-back section and then a full 3.5km loop of Birtinya Island.

Ms Camilleri explained how the event was created.

“Mel Taylor, the original event director of the Nambour parkrun, flagged the idea of a new parkrun location at Birtinya, coinciding with a suggestion from event ambassador Rob Harvey,” she said.

“After scouting the area, Mel and fellow volunteer Jacqui discovered that the original (island) loop was more than a kilometre short.

“The team quickly brainstormed, adding a 1.5km loop to create a full 5km course that would become the new parkrun route.”

The event is reliant on volunteers.

“They play an essential role in the smooth running of each event, and organisers encourage new participants to get involved,” she said.

“All volunteer roles are simple and enjoyable, providing a fulfilling way to give back to the community.”

Many participants enjoy a post-parkrun coffee at nearby Back to Basics Organic Cafe.
