A man has died after being pulled from the water at Peregian Beach on Sunday morning.
Lifeguards and surf lifesavers on jet skis were called to an area north of the patrolled section of beach at about 10.30am following reports of a missing swimmer.
Surfers had alerted them of a man in his 60s getting into difficulty.
Lifeguards and volunteer lifesavers arrived and performed CPR on the patient, until paramedics arrived.
“SLSQ extends their thoughts and sympathies to the victim’s loved ones,” a spokesperson said.
“This tragedy is a reminder to only swim between the red and yellow flags.”
The death is a reminder that even when conditions are small, sandbanks can be unstable and dangerous currents may still be present.
SLSQ will work with relevant authorities, including the Queensland Ambulance Service and the Queensland Coroner regarding the matter.
It is the second surf fatality in the area in the past two weeks and follows the death of a 21-year-old Brisbane man swept to sea in a rip near Stumers Creek at Coolum.
