An experienced health chief executive will take the helm of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service in October.

Dr Peter Gillies, chief executive of Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service for the past five years, said he was eager to get to work in his new role.

“The Sunshine Coast Health team is a passionate group of dedicated professionals and I am looking forward to working with them to continually improve the way we provide care to patients across the region,” he said.

His appointment follows the shock resignation of Adjunct Professor Naomi Dwyer in June.

Dr Peter Gillies is the new chief executive of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service.

Dr Gillies was welcomed to the position by Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Board chair Sabrina Walsh.

“We’re delighted Dr Gillies is joining our health service,” she said.

“The board is looking forward to working with Dr Gillies to continue to provide high quality, safe and timely health care services to the community.”

Dr Gillies has been the chief executive at Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service since 2016 and prior to that he was the general manager for Toowoomba Hospital and the executive director medical services.

He has been a doctor for more than 25 years and has worked in South Africa and the United Kingdom, in hospital and general practice roles.

He also has a background in management, as the general manager of a health software company and as the regional manager for a not-for-profit private hospital in Auckland.

Dr Gillies is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators and has a Master of Business Administration from Otago University. He is also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
