Sunshine Coast Council has revealed it has purchased land for road upgrades that will eventually pave the way for a second much-needed access road from Sunshine Motorway into Coolum, near Mt Coolum.

The clarification comes after a recent announcement that $5 million in Queensland Government funds would be spent improving the small roundabout at the Coolum-Yandina Road and South Coolum Road intersection, which is often swamped by traffic and causes major gridlock – particularly around school pick-up times.

The roundabout works are regarded as one piece of the puzzle to fix the traffic problems in the area – a second element is the construction of a second access to Coolum from Sunshine Motorway.

Council planning process are taking steps to usher in the new access.

“Sunshine Coast Council’s Local Government Infrastructure Plan (LGIP) includes projects to extend Suncoast Beach Drive, Coolum to the Sunshine Motorway and its future south facing ramps,” Division 8 Councillor Jason O’Pray said.

“The LGIP also includes construction of the southern part of South Coolum Road to link it to Suncoast Beach Drive.

“Council has purchased land so the Suncoast Beach Drive and South Coolum Road projects can be delivered together with DTMR’s future upgrade of the Sunshine Motorway and its interchanges.

“The Sunshine Coast Council welcomes the announcement of Dan Purdie MP to invest in Coolum Beach’s transport network.

“Council continues to work with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) by providing input into their planning and coordination of related council projects.”
